On Thursday 4th February, the Scottish Association of Car Clubs organised an evening named ‘Go Rally’ at Pentland Land-Rover, Newbridge, with the aim of raising awareness and attracting newcomers to the sport.
With championship representatives and cars from the Scottish Rally Championship, the Scottish Tarmack Rally Championship and the Ecosse Challenge as well as smaller clubs such as the Saltire Rally Club, those who attended had the opportunity to learn more about getting involved in rallying in Scotland.
As well as championship committee members, members of the media and competitors, there were a few star names there ready to share their memories, passion and wisdom onto those looking to learn.
Former World Champion co-driver Robert Reid, five times Scottish champion David Bogie, 2014 Scottish champion Euan Thorburn and 2015 Scottish champion Jock Armstrong were all in attendance, helping to pull in the crowd.
Speaking to Stewart Weir on the main stage, David Bogie who is to contest the British Rally Championship in 2016 said: “I’ve been all over the UK and I can say that the Scottish forest stages are some of if not the best stages in the country.”
“[The Scottish Championship] is a good place to start. There’s classes of cars to suit everyone from little Peugeot 205s to Ford Escorts.”
“Hopefully the success of the British championship can pass onto Scotland.”
Last year’s champion Jock Armstrong, who has been rallying for over 20 years, outlined what makes the sport so addictive for those competing.
“I’m still enjoying it. It’s just great to be here to get back in to the swing of things.” “There’s nothing like that feeling of getting your first stage time!”
Due to the success of the Go Rally event, it is hoped that events of similar style will be held across the country in the future.
